EORI (Economic Operator Registration and Identification)

Definition of Economic Operator Registration and Identification Number

An Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number is a unique identification code used by those importing or exporting goods to or from the UK and the EU.

While the EORI number is primarily for businesses trading between the EU and non-EU countries, companies only involved in intra-EU trade generally don’t need this number.

Both domestic and foreign entities can apply for an EORI number. However, non-EU entities may need to appoint an indirect representative, such as a customs broker, to import goods using their EORI.

How do I request an EORI number?

To request an EORI number, businesses need to apply to the customs authority of the country where they are established (or where their first customs activity will occur).

In the UK, businesses can apply online via the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) portal.

Do I need an EORI number for all EU countries?

An EORI number issued in any EU member state is valid throughout the entire EU, meaning businesses don’t need to apply for separate EORI numbers for each country.
