The FLEGT Initiative
Definition of the FLEGT Initiative
Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) is an initiative developed by the European Union (EU) to promote sustainable forest management.
The FLEGT Action Plan, introduced in 2003, aims to address the challenges of illegal logging by combining demand-side and supply-side measures.
FLEGT licences are issued under Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPAs) between the EU and timber-producing countries to ensure that timber products exported to the EU are legally harvested.
FLEGT-licensed timber meets the EU Timber Regulation's requirements and can be freely traded in the EU market.
