Definition of Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU)
The Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) is a standardised measurement used to represent the capacity of container ships and terminals. It is based on the dimensions of a standard 20-foot container, which is 20 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 8 feet high.
Typically, a TEU can carry 9 to 11 pallets and holds approximately 28 cubic meters of cargo. This standardised measurement allows shipping companies and ports to calculate container ship capacity and cargo volumes more effectively.
What’s the difference between TEU vs FEU?
While TEU stands for Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit, FEU represents Forty-foot Equivalent Unit. One FEU is equivalent to two TEUs. An FEU container is twice the length of a TEU, measuring 40 feet long, but it maintains the same width and height.
FEUs are generally preferred for larger shipments, as they can hold more cargo – typically 20 to 24 pallets – making them more cost-effective for bulkier goods.
